Packaging For Start-Ups: Things To Know

Launching a new business or product is an exciting occasion. However, you might not be much excited when you have to work on the product packaging. Finding the right packaging to protect and promote your product can be an utmost challenge.

In this article, we will discuss some easy steps on how to create the product packaging that benefits your brand.

The type of packaging you need

First off, you will have to look at the main functions your product packaging must offer. The lines between several types of packaging are usually quite blurred, making it hard for you to pick the best product packaging solution. To find the correct solution, you will have to look at your product and see where you want to sell it.

Consumer/retail packaging

It is the primary packaging option. It comes in direct contact with your product. It can be anything from a can containing your soda drink to a wrapper protecting your chocolate bar. It can also be a gift box containing your expensive clothing or jewelry.

The fundamental purpose of your product packaging is to protect and preserve the main contents. You can print necessary nutritional information on it to let your customers know what they eat.

Secondary packaging

The purpose of secondary packaging is to protect your product during transit. It also protects the primary product packaging. You can also use it as a vessel to showcase your brand throughout the supply chain. It is generally used for logistic purposes.

You can also make shelf-ready packaging out of secondary product packaging. For instance, it can hold 100 chocolate bars. After shipping those products to a supermarket, you would want retailers to shift them to the shelves without any inconvenience. Shelf-ready boxes can be shifted to the shelves without removing the products. This product packaging can bring your products further into the spotlight.

Outer packaging

This packaging ensures the safe delivery of your products to the customers. With an increase in e-commerce retailers, the element of packaging has become more crucial than ever. This packaging is usually the first touch-point between your brand and customers. That is why it has to be durable and attractive.

The outer packaging is usually a corrugated cardboard box. It can also be a die-cut box with a built-in lid. The fundamental characteristic of this box is its durability, which allows it to live through a harsh shipping environment.

Other factors to consider

While deciding about the product packaging, you will have to see the type of your product. Factors that dictate the process of choosing product packaging include the product size, shape, style, and whether it is fragile. The cost of the product also plays a critical role in this regard.

You will also need to pay attention to your audience. Age and gender are necessary factors to consider. You may need to use a box with reusable or interactive designs to promote sustainability. It will also depend on whether your customers are eco-conscious.

Finally, be sure to get in touch with a packaging consultant to know about the best options available. You can also ask them for recommendations.

The best material for shipping

The best material for shipping supplies has to be bubble wrap, in my opinion. This material has many benefits for shipping and receiving. In this short article, we are going to talk about why I believe bubble wrap is the best material. There are many different reasons, but I will do my best to keep it short and sweet. With so many different kinds of material for shipping, it can be challenging to determine which is the best for your company.

To benign with bubble wrap is a great and very durable material. Bubble wrap is a form of plastic protection. It is two sheets of plastic laid together that, when done correctly, forms a large number of air pockets. These air pockets are fun to pop, as most of us know but how difficult it is to do so. This is good because we want the bubbles to be hard to pop. If they were easy to pop, then the items bubble wrap protects will not be as protected due to the bubble popping. Plastic is also a very durable material, as mentioned before. This is good as it will prevent any kind of tears or rips unless excessive force is applied.

Bubble wrap is an excellent material when it comes to protection. Due to it being a flexible plastic, it can go in or around any kind of shape. The bubbles on the wrapping also provide a significant amount of protection due to the bubbles being pockets of air. This is good as it allows for the bubbles to flex and reshape themselves according to the item that the bubble wrapping is wrapped around. The protection that bubble wrap provides is, in my opinion, unrivaled when compared to other kinds of materials. Bubble wrap does not leave any kind of extra space like packing peanuts do.

Bubble wrap is also very versatile. This material can come in many different shapes and sizes. A very useful way this material can come in is in a roll. This is fantastic because it allows for ease of use as well as keeps the material safe. I say safe because it keeps the material off the ground so it can not be stepped on. Additionally, bubble wrap in a roll can be in many different lengths and thicknesses. This is good as, depending on your company and shipping needs, you may not need the thickest bubble wrap, so having options is great. Bubble wrap is also very lightweight. This feature is key as it does not add too much weight to the overall weight of a package being shipped. This will result in not a large price for shipping that package.

Bubble wrap is the best kind of shipping supplies when compared to other supplies. I am a firm believer in this as most of the different kinds of materials do not provide the best protection, like bubble wrap. Additionally, it being as lightweight as it is is an amazing feature as it will reduce the overall cost of shipping. A fun fact to leave you with is that bubble wrap was actually made by accident. About one hundred years ago, there were two men trying to create a new kind of wallpaper by putting two shower curtains in a press. The end result was a plastic sheet with a bunch of air pockets.

Trends in E-Commerce Packaging

The recent rise in online commerce has lead to a multitude of opportunities for both old and new businesses alike. With that, however, have also come some challenges pertaining to packaging all those products, one that is sustainable.

As the popularity of online shopping grows, so does the need for a brand to be distinguishable from the rest. More and more online businesses are going for a more customized packaging that will make them stand out. We have seen things like art, color, logos, all different kinds of packaging displaying different companys’ individuality. This not only boosts the overall customer experience, but it adds to the perceived value of the product inside. Those that go the more traditional packaging route have actually seen a decline in sales. Customers now see this kind of packaging as dull and boring, and think the item inside will be the same or of little value and quality.

Using plastic, cheap, one-time-use packaging is not only damaging the environment, but it also damages the overall look of the business using it, too. Non-sustainable packaging is viewed with apathy in today's market; using sustainable, recyclable packaging is good for the environment and good for your company, too. Companies also want to make sure that they use the right amount of packaging as well. You want to make sure that you have enough to guard the product during shipping but still not using too much. Choosing an eco-friendly, personalized type of packaging in today’s market, is one of the most important things a company can do.

Since the desires and needs of the consumer are forever changing, so, too, must your packing design. Therefore, a company really does have to stay up to date on current packaging trends. Currently speaking, the favored type of packaging to see is cardboard. As noted earlier, plastic has been disfavored for a while now, even though there are some types that can be recycled. Plastic packaging today will put negative marks on your business. People prefer cardboard because it can be recycled and it is easily broken down. Plastic, on the other hand, is a lot harder to get rid of and can be dangerous if not disposed of properly.

Distribution costs can make or break a company when it comes time to get their product to their customer. This is where having the right amount of packaging comes into play, having the right amount can really reduce shipping costs and negative responses from consumers. Having the right amount of packaging can also mean not cutting corners on things like reducing the internal packaging, as well. In the long run, it will be much more cost-effective and safer for the product if you use the right type and the right amount of packaging from the get-go.

As you can see, choosing the right amount and the right type of packaging is crucial. Having your own unique design is just as important as what the packaging is made out of. In today’s market, cardboard is the clear leader as it is cost-efficient, biodegradable, and there is almost no limit to the number of things you can do with it for packaging.

When Every Second Counts, Your Shipping Supplies Decide Who Wins

Every warehouse has the same daily challenge: get more orders out in less time without losing quality. Managers plan, teams hustle, and machines hum, but what truly decides whether the day ends in success or stress often comes down to something surprisingly simple—the shipping supplies. The materials you use every hour of every shift quietly determine your speed, your waste, and your bottom line.

If your boxes buckle, your tape splits, or your filler clogs the packing station, every delay ripples through your workflow. A single weak link turns a fast process into a frustrating one. Yet when your shipping supplies are strong, consistent, and easy to use, the entire system transforms. Workers move naturally from order to order. Boxes seal faster. Lines stay cleaner. Everything flows.

Quality shipping materials do more than protect what’s inside the package—they protect your time. Strong double-wall corrugated boxes hold their shape during stacking and transport, preventing costly re-packs. Reinforced water-activated tape seals once and holds under pressure, cutting seconds off each package. Paper-based fillers load directly into dispensers and break down cleanly, eliminating the wasted minutes that come from cleaning up popped plastic cushions. Small improvements like these compound fast, especially in high-volume operations.

Warehouse efficiency doesn’t always come from automation or big spending. Sometimes it comes from smaller, smarter choices. The best managers audit their packing lines with a stopwatch and a notepad, not a spreadsheet. They measure where time leaks away—taping, labeling, or restocking—and fix the source, not the symptom. In almost every case, the solution starts with upgraded materials. High-performance shipping supplies reduce friction. Less friction means fewer mistakes, faster throughput, and happier workers.

Eco-friendly materials add another layer of efficiency. Paper-based packaging not only protects your products—it protects your workflow. It’s cleaner to store, easier to recycle, and lighter to handle. Recycled mailers pack flat, saving storage space and restock time. Sustainable shipping is often simpler shipping, and simplicity always wins in the warehouse.

Every second saved at the packing table translates into more orders fulfilled by day’s end. Over a week, that can mean hours regained. Over a year, it can mean thousands of dollars saved in labor costs alone. And those savings don’t just stay in your budget—they show up in customer satisfaction too. Orders that leave your dock faster and arrive intact build confidence, loyalty, and repeat sales.

Cheap supplies can’t deliver those results. They might look like savings on paper, but in practice, they slow everything down. Weak tape, soft boxes, and inconsistent fillers cause rework, waste, and stress. High-quality, efficient shipping supplies are the opposite—they’re a quiet form of leadership. They make your warehouse feel organized, capable, and in control.

So if your team is always rushing and your output still feels stuck, don’t start by blaming the schedule or the staff. Start with what they’re working with. Replace frustration with reliability. Replace waste with structure. Replace disposable materials with ones designed to last. Because in the warehouse, speed isn’t just about moving faster—it’s about removing everything that slows you down. When every second counts, your shipping supplies decide who wins.

Shrink vs. stretch wrap

Shrink wrapping and stretch wrapping are both kinds of shipping supplies that are often confused for one another. They are both made of the same type of material, that being a form of plastic. They also both look like one another, so distinguishing them from one another can be challenging. Often times in large businesses that use both of these protective shipping materials, they get used thinking it was the other way around and needed to undo all the work that was just done so it can be wrapped appropriately. In this short article, we are going to take a look at the differences that separate these two products and the similarities that cause them to be misused.

To begin with, stretch wrap is a thin film of plastic or polyethylene. This material is used to wrap up large items or stacked items that are on a pallet. This is done because the plastic provides a barrier from the elements. The wrapping has a good effect of repelling water and collecting dust that would otherwise damage the products under the plastic. As the plastic gets wrapped around the products, it is to be protecting a large amount of tension is applied. This tension application allows the plastic film to stretch up to three hundred percent more than it was initially. The tension also provides a kind of force around the load, much like straps, keeping the items in place.

Shrink wrap is made much like stretch wrap in the fact that polyethylene is the manufacturing process. Ultimately it is still a kind of plastic film. This plastic film is used best for wrapping up food products, toys, DVDs, frozen foods, and etcetera. Rather than using some sort of straps or packaging for bulk items they can be srink wrapped. This is done quite often for items like multiple candles in a group. The shink wrap is wrapped around the items and when that is done heat is applied. The application of heat causes the wrapping to shrink and form a much tighter bond. This creates a battier that protects the wrapped items from out side natural phenomenon.

These two products are very similar. Most of the time these two plastic wraps get mistaken for one another and misused in the workplace environment. Both of these products protect items that are wrapped up in them. Shink wrap is generally used smaller products like DvD’s as mentioned before. Stretch wrap is mostly used for larger products or multiple stacked items. Both of these products are alos made form the same kind of material being polyethylene. It is a form of plastic that can be made into multiple different things.

The use of this material as a shipping supplies is essential in the shipping industry. With endless uses it is great that this was made. It is great that this material can be used to protect items that are being shipped. I say this because it is vital that a shipped item or items arrive to the buyer undamaged. With the use of this material it has the ability to do just that. It is good that we have something like this in todays world as alot of people like to buy items off line and generally in bulk.

Bubble Wrap Rolls

When it comes to shipping supplies a vital material to have is bubble wrapping. This fun to play with material can come in a flat sheet or a large roll. The roll is often seen more as it makes the storage of this material much easier than it would be if it were just a flat sheet laid on top of each other. When it comes to storing or shipping fragile items like picture frames, fine china, or electronics, you would know how important it is to protect those items from breakage. This is where bubble wrap comes in. this material provides a great amount of protection for the enclosed item. In this short article, we are going to talk about the use of bubble wrap rolls and the protection the material can provide.

You may be wondering to yourself as to why bubble wrap is shipped and stored in rolls, and that is a good thing to wonder. The simple answer is that because it is most easily shipped in the rolls. The answer to that question goes deeper, but so we are not here for a while, I wanted to keep it simple. Because this material is in a roll, that means if you were to buy it, you would get a bulk deal. This is good because it will keep the price down. When bubble wrap is in sheets, it is generally more expensive than the rolls, and you will be getting less material instead of a roll. Most of the time, if you look up bubble wrap on google and click the shopping tab, you will see it in rolls. Rolls are also much easier to use instead of a sheet because you can cut the roll on the perforated edge but on a sheet, you will need to use scissors.

Bubble wrap rolls make storage easy. Due to the material being in a roll, it allows for it to be stored much easier than other kinds of protection material. Speaking of protection, bubble wrap provides the greatest amount of protection for items being wrapped in it. Since the bubbles on the bubble wrap are essentially pockets of air that can move, this makes it one of the best kinds of materials for protecting the fragile items you have going into storage or are being shipped.

Getting bubble wrap in a roll is beneficial because most of the time the rolled bubble wrap is the best quality bubble wrap. In general, bubble wrap is a high quality material for shipping and storing. It is a hard material that is not easily damaged unless you are avidly trying to pop the bubbles. For the most part, bubble wrap is a durable material that can be reused multiple times. The only thing that will determine if it can be used again is to pop all the protective bubbles. The best part about a roll is that it will keep the wrap up off the ground so it can not be stepped on and popped.

Bubble wrap on a roll is the best kind of material when it comes to talking about shipping supplies. Due to the fact that its high quality and durability coupled with offering the highest amount of protection, this is what leads me to believe it is the best material. Having it on a roll makes it that much easier to work with. The roll also makes it easier to store without having the fear it will be stepped on or have something else put on top of it, thus popping all the bubbles rendering it useless.

Data Points on Your Packaging Line

One of the best things that we have these days, is of course data. Even the smallest setups have technology that’ll allow you to understand your operational magnitude. It’s important to understand this, as it plays a vital part in the packaging line. With more and more automation and machines that are sophisticated, we’ve got more and more data than ever before. Here, we’ll go over the important data points to remember.

Why Care about Data

Data is vital for making sure that you know what’s going on in your warehouse. The collection is just the first step. Companies that benefit from this are able to see the insights, and improve their operations.

It offers better decisions in the following:

  • The planning of labor and how many need to use a piece of equipment to do some activities

  • Improves the safety margins

  • Lets you know about the inventory, also some smart planning of the materials that are there, and the transit too

  • The storage and planning of inventory and needs

  • The operational issues, and how to rectify them.

Critical Data Points to Know

Now that we’ve gone over why you need data, let’s talk about the three data points you should always pay mind to.

The first is order accuracy. This is looking at what's going out, and finally, what’s coming into this. if you’ve got inventory issues, you’ve got to explore how you order, and the shipments that suppliers have. For issues with order fulfillment, you might want to get a vision system so you can see what you’re going to be sending out, and also improve this.

The equipment downtime is another one. This is one that looks at the downtime of equipment, the problems therein, and the information to look at what’s wrong, and the structures that need to be upgraded. Without this one, you’re going to have machines that are down, and it’s going to throw a wrench in the whole operation.

The final one is warehouse capacity. This is one that’s important to understand because it shows how much of the warehouse is being used, and how much is getting done.  You can also look at how much human capacity is happening, and where it’s falling apart. If you notice that the warehouse is constantly at, or even near max, the solution might be to improve the machines by getting better stuff, or scaling back if you have a lot of machines not being used. As for people, this shows how the people are being used, and you can manage and train them to see fit.

For humans, this also shows well, whether or not you’re using the facilities correctly. On the flip side, if you’re someone that notices that the business is constantly at under-capacity, you should scale this back, or look for new ways to manage that space, so that it’s not being used.

These are three data points that you can use if you’re looking to improve your business.

The key thing here is to look at these data points, and constantly stare at them. Data is vital for the production of companies, and it allows you to make decisions that are beneficial to you. if you notice that something is amiss inside your workshop, or that you’re not using everything effectively, then try to make sure that the data is there, put it in place, and if you feel like there are areas that you can improve on, do so, so that you can have peak operational efficiency too.

What Shipment Companies Should Be Keen on When Packaging

One thing that plays a major role in your business as you building on your brand is your mode of packaging. Have damaged or spoiled products...
